The Fundamentalist War on Sex Targets Valentine's Day

Abrahamic Religion has, if you will pardon the expression, a real hard-on for fertility and sex. Hard-partying gods who had sex, basically mirroring the lives of their worshippers became a no-no in the late monarchic period in Israel. YHWH himself became de-sexed, or emasculated and his priests had to follow rigid purity laws. Purity was not only a monotheistic thing of course; polytheistic religions in the ancient world had rules about that as well, but not to the obsessive degree seen in the Old Testament, where even having dealings with Gentiles could defile a person. Nor did polytheistic religions develop the same negative attitude toward nudity and sex.

With 2000 years to harden those negative attitudes, it’s no wonder that modern fundamentalists dislike sex and fertility. We have seen a relentless war on the fact that women have breasts and vaginas and in the Florida Legislature you can’t even use the scientifically correct term “uterus” (though laws can somehow be made to regulate that organ).

Nude statues must be covered up lest children discover the difference between the genders and this is nothing new: in a Bristol church house where John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was too distracted by a half-clothed statue (above) in the Bristol church where he worshipped. and had it fit with a lead cuirass to cover it’s breasts.

The whole Adam and Eve eating the apple story is really a metaphor for the discovery of sexuality. So those that believe this story are repressing their sexuality and the original sin is finding out about sex.

I always laugh at people who are embarrased at statues that are nude or partially nude. Stone and wood do not turn me on.

Wow, I didn't know breasts were radioactive. No wonder Marie Curie discovered radioactivity.

Fundies on losing side of war on sex. Lady Gaga's taking you down.

Funny, xtians don't like boobs, and muslims don't like ANY portion of a woman to be visible...odd how fundamentalist religions are so intent on keeping women from being seen, or heard.

I figured the lead cuirass was to prevent even Superman from seeing boobies. Christians need not worry though, the man of steel is too boyscout to stare.

I remember an analogy long ago by one of the radio pundits. He said lots of people proclaim how sex is ordinary, common, and nearly everyone does it. He then said there is a pipe leading away from our houses, and what's in that pipe is also normal, natural, etc. But what happens in those societies elsewhere in the world, where it runs in the street, instead of kept off of it? Do you find disease in addition to squalor? Exposure to provocative material is to varying degrees, but the "shock value" necessary to get a rise out of people loses its effect as the material becomes more commonplace.

Comparing the sex act to feces is part of the problem with people like this. Now, if the sex act is comparable to taking a crap, what does that say about the act of procreation? Do this people think of their children as vile and filthy, as a result? Probably, in some sense.

Comparing the sex act to feces is part of the problem with people like this.

Those who feel they must ridicule the comparison are generally those who've chosen a behavior, and go to no end in personal attempts to justify it.

according to that philosophy, children are equivalent to feces. Of course, that would mean that they, themselves, are fecal matter, too - so in other words, this philosophy is basically a form of self-loathing. That's sad. Why would anyone want to compare human beings (children!) to feces?

Told you in another seed, bonos - self loathing plays a huge part in conservative thought.

I'd say it's more like your philosophy; once again, a desperate attempt to justify a behavior that participants or defenders need to justify. It's more like the behavior that's comparable to feces, not the children...

I disagree with the characterization of the Old Testament view of sex in Paragraph One. The OT presents a lusty people! Has anyone read the Song of Solomon lately? It was Paul (as usual) who did the dirty work. And the fundies won't be satisfied until the rest of us are as repressed and unhappy as they are.

There are so many contradiction written down in the name of religion. Its as if a man with multiple personality disorder, ADD, paranoia, erectile disfunction and "mommy issues" wrote all the darn books!

It is in human nature to enjoy having sex. Isn't that what the big O is all about? Isn't that why BOTH sexes have the ability to have an orgasm? Or is it jealousy because women [if he is doing it right! lol.] can have multiple orgasms during sex?

What happens between consenting adults in the privacy of their bedrooms is NO ONE ELSE'S BUSINESS!!! Why exactly, is it so hard for these people to understand this!?!

Better yet, does it become other people's business if the activity is paraded around for everyone to see? I don't care what two consenting adults do behind closed doors, that's their business. But don't shove it in other people's faces, because then you are making it their business.

Well bonos, we have long lists of diseases, and their causes have varying degrees of personal responsibility. We finance research into cures for many of them. If people wouldn't behave the way they do, a lot of these diseases would be a lot less common. My question was not about control, it was about the responsibility of others to help when the activity causes disease. I'd suspect that "outragious" (outrageous?) fully expects the general population to pay for work on AIDS, hepatitis, and similar STD's!?!

I get so tired of hearing the don't parade your lifestyle around in public argument. I'm curious; do you hold hands with your significant other in public? What about a peck on the cheek or even, gasp, a kiss? If you are a Christian, do you wear witnessing t-shirts? Isn't that parading your lifestyle and shoving it in other people's faces?

        Just asking.

do you hold hands with your significant other in public?

Yes. Don't you? Last I checked it wasn't illegal for anyone to hold hands.

What about a peck on the cheek or even, gasp, a kiss?

Peck on the check, rarely, full blown kiss, no, my personal life remains, personal, hench the words, "personal life".

If you are a Christian, do you wear witnessing t-shirts?

No and no. I don't think I have any shirts that have personal views or thoughts on them, if I did though it would be something alongs the lines of helping animals.

So I agree with the whole people keep their personal lives, personal thing. I really don't see any reason why people need to tell others about the sexual activities.

So how do you define "shoving" a lifestyle in other people's faces?

Don't get me wrong; I am a big fan of keeping my personal life personal. I also figure if others don't want to do the same; I don't have to watch.

Are you in favor of the gov't making what you eat or drink or your sex life their business?

Anything I eat or drink is already government business. There are lots of regulations to try to prevent disease (including the attempt to shut down the"bath houses" at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic), and we fund research into cures.

Holding hands (with a female, in my case) is the basis is how we all got here. Other activities are the ones that the participants feel so strongly that they must defend. I believe the need to defend, originates deep in those same people, and their realization of how they got here.

            outragious,

Did you ignore the second sentence of my earlier post? Here, I will repeat it for you: I don't care what two consenting adults do behind closed doors, that's their business. As for people holding hands or a kiss/peck on the cheek, I have no problem with that whatsoever. It's when I see couples in shopping malls (or other public areas, especially where children can view it) sitting on a bench gnawing off each others faces is what I have a problem with, gay or straight, I just don't want to see it. I consider that to be "parading" one's lifestyle. As for religion, I don't "wear" it, I try to live by the tenets of my beliefs. I am willing to discuss my faith with anyone when an opportunity is presented. However, I don't go out proselytizing in the manner of the Jehovah's Witnesses. I hope that clears things up a little.

That is what happens when you practice a male supremacy religion - you torture yourself and others by adopting unnatural and thus unhealthy way of life. That is also why there is so much sex deviancy among clergy in those religions.

                    1. You make Yahweh the only deity, and he is obviously a male. Never mind that he used to be married to Asherah - a real god does not need anybody else, thought the ancient Hebrews... http://thehistoryofgod.blogspot.com/2006/01/origins-of-yahweh.html
                    2. You relegate women to the status of livestock and slaves.
                    3. Male-female sexuality becomes something dirty and only sanctioned to make children. In a lot of orthodox Jewish sects men still dance with other men during social events. That is how sexual deviancies are started.
                    4. You force celibacy on the priests and give them access to children. What do you think is going to happen?
                    5. You cover up the deviant acts and you shelter deviants using the 'holy man' smoke screen.
                    6. All along the male only hierarchy makes sure their religious scam is forced upon people - starting from butchering dissenters in Old Testament, to the management structure of just about all Abrahamic sects (in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam)

Abrahamic religions are the oldest con game in the world still practiced today.

Spirituality can be a great thing. But most religions have very little true spirituality in them. Repressive and dogmatic religions have very little value to society and individuals.

"You" are the proponents of these religions.
People need to study history of religions to understand how these beliefs were formed. As long as people understand the 'evolution' of religious thought over time, they can believe whatever they like or chose. Religious beliefs can be very healthy and inspiring, but they can also be horrific, like in the case of religious fanatics resorting to violence for religious reasons. From stoning people for 'blasphemy' in ancient times, to Islamic terrorism - there is no shortage of blind hatred among the religious folks.
To me, spirituality is an affirmation of life, joy, human dignity, and respect for Nature and all it's parts, us included. Not some dogmatic system of belief gradually invented by priests who were eager for power, wealth, and control.
