FDA Warns Pets Being Poisoned by Treats: Manufacturers Refusing Recall

Bella in New York, Chansey, Ginger and Sampson in Ohio, Shelby in Pennsylvania, Sarge in Tennessee,Venus in Washington, Sherma, Tundra, Gracie Mae,Chester and Anna Claire; this is just a handful of victims of the latest deadly danger to pets.

Animal owners are once again at the mercy of pet food companies, as their pets are being poisoned by the very people that they trust to keep them healthy. Once again, claim pet owners, their beloved and innocent family members are dying from eating food items that US companies are importing from China.

Pet owners went through a similar scare in 2007, when the biggest dog food recall in U.S. history came in the wake of thousands of dead and dying pets. That year the FDA received reports of approximately 8500 animal deaths, including at least 1950 cats and 2200 dogs who died after eating contaminated food.

This time, there is no recall. The poisoned products are still stocked on store shelves across the country, with no indication that they will be removed any time soon. Dogs varying age from puppies to seniors have been falling ill and dying and the only thing the dogs have in common is that each of them ate dog treats imported from China.

When Purina began to receive calls from customers whose pets had become ill after eating their Waggin Train jerky treats, they initially discussed financial settlements, but when the FDA’s tests came back with inconclusive results, Purina took all offers off the table. Some consumers who have posted about pet’s illnesses on Purina’s and Dogswell’s websites have been banned from posting there any longer.

Stuff like this is what makes me sick. They have zero accountablility for their sub par chinese garbage they sell and to ban people for posting animal health problems caused by their "food" is disgusting. All the more reson to pay the extra couple of bucks and buy good pet food or all natural pet food.

The growing number of recalls has motivated at least one well-known animal protection organization, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to recommend "until this crisis is resolved ... pets be fed products containing U. S.-sourced protein supplements only."

Ugh, more import contamination's. The freezer with actual meat products at the local pet store is looking more practical every day.

Thank you for the info. I had not heard anything about this. I have never given my pets any of those things but I will make sure to pay attention to where my treats come from. I will be calling my vet later today I think though.

Just one more example of why when you see "Made in China" on the label put it back on the shelf. It's the only way these @!$%#s will get the message. Try "Made in America". It's really the only way we as consumers can fight back. Buy nothing from China "PERIOD".

When is our government going to stop allowing China to export any type of food to our country period.

China has no safety law on anything that they product, it time to start manufacturing our own product her so we can protect ourselves and our pets. Wasn't it just three years ago we had many of our pet die because of China producing our pet food, I guess we didn't learn anything from that at all. It time to stop buying any pet food that isn't product in this country, pet are like children and must be care for. We wouldn't want to take a chance of feeding our children something that can kill them so why would we take the chance with our pets.

We do not need China we can produce our own pet food here which also will give some of our fellow American jobs.

But we do feed our children crap that can harm them. If we didn't childhood obesity wouldn't be a problem. We just don't feed them plastics.

Childhood obesity wouldn't be a problem if they got off their lazy asses and went outside and played, instead of sitting in front of the TV playing video games. Have you heard the news out of California, if there was ever any a doubt where it originated? Now they want to make sugar a controlled substance. This is insanity at it's finest, and one more way to say Americans are unable to make healthy decisions on their own. My mother in law lived to be 93 and she ate crap. My Dad lived to 78 and he ate crap. I eat crap and smoke, never have to go to the doctor, am in good physical condition, active, maybe a little over weight and will be 57 in 2 months.. It's not about what we eat as much as is it lifestyle choices, and the chemical content of our foods. It might also help if we didn't depend on pharmaceutical drugs to replace discipline for our kids. We'd rather give them a pill than a Twinkie.

Maybe I will just start making their treats for them. I already boil meat to add to their dry food and hopefully Iams and Science Diet kibble is safe. I get so tired of hearing about companies that don't really care about my pets.

I check all the labels before buying any dog treats. If any of the ingrediants are from any place except the U.S., I don't buy the product.

Lately, I've been getting some dog treats that are made locally. I have to pay a little more, but I break the "cookies" in small pieces. Like my vet said, dogs don't know the difference in the size of a cookie, all they know, is "COOKIE! I'm getting a COOKIE!!"

Pil, I was in Costco a while back and I was going to buy some tasty looking meals I could quickly warm up in the microwave. I looked at the package and, holy cow, made in China. There is no way I would eat that or even give it to my dogs.

The Chinese were caught just a few months ago putting the baby formula tainted with melamine (causes kidney failure in dogs and humans) back on grocery shelves China after it had been taken off the market last year. They don't care about their own kids. Do you think they give a rat's ass about your dogs? Nope.

      Don't buy Chinese anything.

I saw Chinese band aids in the store the other day. I wonder just how sterile they really are?

Damn shame to treat animals this way.

Grump, I don't think anything or anybody in China is sterile. Note the 1.34 billion people there.

grump, I totally agree with you! I never used to look at ingrediants or where the product was packaged/etc., but now I read the back of everything before I buy it. There is absolutely no way will I buy any food products for my family (which includes my dogs).

        Band-Aids made in China?? omg..

I saw some condoms made in China in a store, too. First, they are probably really small. Second, they obviously don't work as per Lee's comment.
